Tooth Extraction

What is Tooth Extraction?

We do everything we can to save and preserve the teeth in your mouth. Unfortunately, there may come a time when a tooth is beyond the point of being saved. Likewise, a tooth may be a problem or threat to your future dental health, so removing it can help to prevent issues from developing. Extractions are done comfortably and easily in our office on both pediatric and adult patients.

Why would a Tooth Extraction be needed?

Extractions are done on an as-needed basis. If other treatments are available to help preserve and save the tooth, we will recommend these first before simply removing a tooth. Some of the reasons a tooth may need to be removed include:

  • A tooth is severely loose or decayed
  • A tooth has cracked below the gum line
  • A baby tooth isn’t falling out on its own
  • You have impacted or problematic wisdom teeth
  • You want to avoid the expense or inconvenience of other procedures

Who is a candidate for a Tooth Extraction?

Dr. Bloom will first examine your teeth to determine if an extraction is necessary. If other treatments are available, we will recommend these to you before removing the tooth. However, the decision falls on our patient, and it is not uncommon for our patients to want a tooth removed to avoid the trouble of other procedures. Most people who need an extraction can safely have the procedure done.

What happens during a typical Tooth Extraction?

The procedure will begin with a local anesthetic or sedation used to numb and relax you. The tooth is then loosened using special tools and lifted out of the mouth. The process is incredibly quick, and most of our patients find that it takes longer to drive into the office and receive anesthetic than it does to have the tooth removed. Sutures may be placed to close the gums and promote healing. You will go home with important aftercare instructions that are used to help the surgical site to heal.

If you think you may need an extraction, call our office today and we can get you in for a convenient appointment in our practice offering minimal wait times.
