Inlays and Onlays

What are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are restorations that can enhance and restore your smile. Inlays will sit inside the grooves of a tooth while the onlay will sit over the very top of the tooth. Both restorations are ideal for patients who wouldn’t necessarily benefit from a full dental crown, but who need something more solid and durable when compared to a filling. Inlays and onlays can easily last for decades without needing special care or treatment.

Why would Inlays and Onlays be needed?

The reason inlays and onlays may be needed is because you have a tooth with a large area of decay or one that has a large filling in it. You may need an onlay if your tooth has broken or cracked just on the very top or surface. Both restorations are customized for each individual patient. This means that the inlay or onlay that is placed will feel comfortable and blend in well with the rest of your smile.

Who is a candidate for Inlays and Onlays?

Dr. Bloom can examine your teeth to determine if you’re a good candidate for inlays and onlays. Most patients who need the procedure can and should have it done in order to perfect their smile. Because inlays and onlays are made out of durable, custom made materials, many patients request these as an alternative to a dental filling. Our goal is to provide you with a full and healthy smile with the help of a dental restoration.

What happens during the procedure for Inlays and Onlays?

The procedure will begin with a numbing agent administered in the area the work is being done. Dr. Bloom will then remove old filling material and decay. Impressions are taken and used to make the new inlay or onlay. You will come back in for a second visit so that the permanent restoration can be placed. Adjustments are made to improve the feel and fit of the inlay or onlay before you leave the office. Most of these restorations can last for years or even decades before needing replacement.
