What is Gum Recontouring?
Gum recontouring is a procedure that can help to perfect and enhance your smile. The procedure involves removing excess gum tissue from above the teeth. This helps to eliminate the look of a “gummy” or short smile. The surgery can be done for cosmetic reasons, or it may be needed before a full crown can be placed properly.
Why is Gum Recontouring needed?
The main reason gum recontouring is needed is because you may be looking for a way to improve the look of your smile. If you have a “gummy” or short smile, you may not feel confident in the way that you look. Gum recontouring is safe and highly effective, as it removes excess gum tissue. This exposes more healthy tooth surface so that your smile is bigger and brighter.
Who is a candidate for Gum Recontouring?
Dr. Bloom can examine your teeth to determine if you might need or will benefit from gum recontouring. Most patients with a “gummy” or short smile can benefit from recontouring. If you need a crown that isn’t fitting properly because of excess gum tissue, you may need to undergo this particular surgery. Despite gum recontouring being oral surgery, it is a simple and quick procedure that is done in-office.
What happens during Gum Recontouring?
First, a local anesthetic is used to numb the area. If requested, we offer many different sedation options to make the appointment more comfortable for you. Dr. Bloom then uses special tools to remove excess gum tissue and lift the tissue around the teeth. Sutures are placed to help the gums heal properly as well to keep the gums in their new position. You will go home with aftercare instructions as well as a special mouth rinse to help the gums to heal properly. You will then experience a larger and brighter smile thanks to the work of gum recontouring.
