Dental Implants

What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a restoration that can be used to replace a missing tooth. Multiple implants can be placed to replace more than one tooth or even an entire arch within the mouth. Implants are relatively permanent, since they osseointegrate and fuse with the bone of the jaw after being placed. Implants replace both the crown and roots of a tooth that is missing.

Why are Dental Implants needed?

You may want or need a dental implant if you are missing one or more teeth. Implants are necessary both aesthetically as well as functionally. For example, if you are missing a lot of teeth, implants can help to improve your ability to eat and chew your favorite foods. If you are feeling badly about your smile, implants can be used to completely restore the way that it looks.

Who Is A Candidate For Dental Implants

Who is a candidate for Dental Implants?

Dr. Bloom will examine your teeth to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. If you have bone loss in the area where the implant will be placed, we may recommend a bone grafting prior to the actual surgery. Most patients who would like an implant can safely have the procedure done. We offer a variety of sedative options to improve your comfort during the procedure.

What is the procedure like for Dental Implants?

The procedure will begin with a consultation that involves x-rays and an exam. The exam and x-rays allow us to identify the perfect placement of the new implant. The procedure itself involves administering sedation or anesthetic of your choosing. We then create an incision through the gums and insert the titanium implant deep into the bone. It is given time to osseointegrate and fuse with the bone. This can take several months, but is completely unique to the individual patient. The final step is creating and placing a crown, bridge or complete denture for the new implants that have been placed.
